Payconiq product to be discontinued in 2026 – but the app and commercial solutions will remain in use

In recent months, there has been much press speculation over the future of the Payconiq product. This can of course lead to misinformation and uncertainty, both for users of the Payconiq by Bancontact app and Payconiq merchants and integrators. Here, you will find everything you need to know about the changes coming to Payconiq and, to the extent possible, an answer to your questions.

In Belgium, Payconiq has become the market reference for fast and secure mobile payments, whether between friends or in stores. The Payconiq payment solution is very popular among merchants, with consumers required simply to scan the merchant's QR code – on a sticker, on the cash register or an invoice, online, on the payment terminal or on the merchant's smartphone.

In 2024, European company EPI (European Payments Initiative) launched Wero: a pan-European payment solution that enables payments between friends and, in time, in stores and online. Wero is currently available for payments between friends through banking apps from Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING Belgium and KBC.

As a major player in mobile payments in Belgium, we believe it is important to evolve with the latest innovations, making them as accessible as possible for all. That is why we decided to join forces with EPI.

Bancontact will retain its place as a strong local, ever-innovating brand and product – both in-store and online, as well as for payments between friends.

How Payconiq is evolving

In concrete terms, this means that the Payconiq payment platform is set to transition to a Bancontact and Wero payment platform. In practice, therefore, Payconiq payments will be replaced by Bancontact and Wero payments

Payconiq by Bancontact is the 100% Belgian app for all mobile payments, now and into the future. The Payconiq by Bancontact app is and will remain accessible to anyone with a Belgian bank account, with customers at 19 different banks able to access the Payconiq by Bancontact app.

By 2026, the Payconiq brand will no longer exist, to be replaced by another brand name. This means that, while the trusted payment app and popular payment solution for merchants will remain in place, it will now operate under a brand-new name.

Coming up:

More information for users on the Payconiq by Bancontact app

More information for merchants on a sticker solution or Payconiq GO

More information for merchants using a Payconiq payment solution at a cash register, online, on their invoices, in an app or within a closed top-up payment system

As always, ease of use, security and accessibility remain our top priorities for the Payconiq by Bancontact app and its users. That is why we are committed each and every day to guaranteeing that the app meets these priorities and why we are constantly refining Payconiq by Bancontact, from its functionality and speed to its design and ease of use.

By 2026, the Payconiq brand will no longer exist, to be replaced by another brand name. This means that, while the trusted payment app will remain in place, it will not operate under a brand-new name. Users can continue to use the app to send and receive payments to and from friends (via a QR code or payment request – even if the friends in question are using a Belgian banking app), to pay online using Bancontact or to pay in-store using a QR code. What's more, the familiar app will continue to offer the 'Invoices' function, the option to add loyalty cards, the ability to find nearby ATMs, the ability to purchase tickets for De Lijn or NMBS/SNCB, and so on – just under a new name.

How will I be affected by this change?

As stated earlier, we remain committed to making the Payconiq by Bancontact app as user-friendly, safe and accessible as possible. Later this year, an updated version of the app will be launched under the current name, with improved ease of use that should make mobile payments even easier than before. There will be more information on this update in the summer.

When the name is changed in 2026, the Payconiq brand will be replaced by another name. By that time, other than the name change, nothing will change in terms of the app and its functionality. More information will follow next year.

Any questions?

Will someone with a Belgian banking app still be able to scan a QR code created with the Payconiq by Bancontact app?

tags

Yes. What is possible today will continue to be possible in the future. You will still be able to create QR codes with your Payconiq by Bancontact app in the same way as today, and these codes can be scanned either via Payconiq by Bancontact or with one of the banking apps below.

And vice versa: Payconiq by Bancontact users will also still be able to scan QR codes created with the banking apps below.

Will I still be able to make mobile payments online and in store?

tags

Yes. The well-known Payconiq QR codes in store will continue to exist and will still be able to be scanned with the Payconiq by Bancontact app and Belgian bank apps.

You will also still be able to pay online with the Payconiq by Bancontact app or your bank app by selecting the Bancontact button on the merchant's payment page.

While the Payconiq product may be disappearing, the familiar mobile payment solution for merchants will remain in place. The familiar Payconiq products for merchants using the Payconiq sticker solution or Payconiq GO are technically set to transition to Bancontact and Wero payment solutions. While this will require a few technical changes, the transition will primarily take place in the background. If your Payconiq payment solution was provided by a third party (or your own IT department) for your cash register, invoicing or website, a small adjustment will need to be made. More information on this is provided further down this page.

In concrete terms, Payconiq payments will be replaced by Bancontact and Wero payments via the existing QR code. Customers can continue paying as they did before by using their Payconiq by Bancontact or banking app.

What changes can my customers and I expect?

Not much. As stated earlier, while this change requires a few technical alterations, these will be hardly noticeable. Later this year, your Payconiq sticker or Payconiq GO solution will transition to Bancontact and Wero payment solutions. This change will take place automatically and in the background. Your current Payconiq QR code and the Payconiq GO app will remain the same, meaning you can continue using them as before. The only difference will be that you will be able to use the same QR codes to receive payments via Bancontact and Wero. Your customers will still be able to pay in-store via their Payconiq by Bancontact or banking app. Following this transition, your payment system will still be subject to the same pricing conditions as they are today.

Finally, in 2026, the Payconiq name will also disappear and be replaced. On a technical level, nothing will change. It is only the marketing materials that will look different. Over time, the design of your QR code and the name of the Payconiq GO app will also change – although the QR code itself will remain the same.

Over the coming months, you can expect to receive further communications from us. It is possible that some changes may need to be made to your merchant account in the run-up to this transition. Should this be the case, we will be in touch. So be sure to keep an eye on your inbox (for the email address linked to your merchant account).

Any questions?

Will I still be able to use the same sticker?

tags

Yes. You will simply be able to continue using your current Payconiq sticker even when your system evolves to the Bancontact and Wero payment system.

After the name change in 2026, you will receive a package from us with new marketing material with the new name, including updated QR code stickers (your QR code itself will remain the same, the design and name around it will look different).

Will I still have access to the Payconiq merchant portal?

tags

Yes. Please note that as part of this evolution, the merchant portal will receive an update. As a result, the link to the portal will change. The new link will be communicated to you in a timely and clear manner, and even if you still visit the old link, you will be redirected to the new webpage.

You will still be able to log in with your current login details, but will have to set a new password once when you first log in to the updated portal.

Can I choose when my payment platform will evolve?

Do you offer Payconiq via a Payconiq sticker solution, or Payconiq GO? Then the adaptation in your payment system will be carried out automatically by Bancontact Payconiq Company and you will not notice anything. You will be informed in time when this adjustment will take place.

Do you have a Payconiq integration in your payment solution? In other words, was your Payconiq payment solution provided by a supplier/integrator (or your own IT department) on your cash register, invoice or website? If so, an adjustment will need to be made to your payment system. If you do the integration yourself via an API key, you will receive more information from us about the action to take. If you are working through a third party for your Payconiq integration, please contact your integrator.

While Payconiq is set to disappear as an integrated solution, it will still be possible to receive mobile payments via an integrated cash register, online, on invoices, via an app or within a closed top-up payment system.

By the end of this year, the Payconiq product will transition to Bancontact and Wero payment solutions. In concrete terms, Payconiq payments will be replaced by Bancontact and Wero payments using the existing QR code. Customers can continue paying as they did before by using their Payconiq by Bancontact or banking app.

While this will involve a few technical changes, our top priority is to minimize any impact on merchants, thereby ensuring the smooth continuation of their activities.

What changes can my customers and I expect?

Generally speaking, a small adjustment will need to be made to your payment system (changing the end-point of the API). The new developer portal, which will be shared with you and your integrator over the coming months, will clearly describe exactly how this will be done.

Work with a third party (integrator) for your Payconiq integration?

Your integrator will make the necessary adjustments to your system. We will be contacting integrators about this, and will keep you informed with more information over the coming months. Please also contact your integrator directly to ensure that this adjustment takes place as smoothly as possible. For any specific questions about this transition, please contact your integrator.

Are you personally responsible for the integration of the Payconiq API into your payment solution? Are you an integrator?

Over the coming months, you will receive specific information from us about what is expected of you, as well as a link to the updated developer portal. So be sure to keep an eye on your inbox.
