Digital payments continue to grow: mobile and QR payments on the rise in Belgium
The latest Digital Payments Barometer 2025 shows that digital payments have become more deeply embedded in Belgians’ everyday lives. Mobile payments are rising steadily, particularly payments via QR code, and contactless card payments remain a well-established norm. Once again, the figures clearly show that Belgians prefer digital over cash.
According to the latest Digital Payment Barometer, an Ipsos study conducted by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel on behalf of Febelfin, Bancontact Payconiq Company and several other players in the payment industry, the following trends can be noted:
- 84% of Belgians prefer digital payments over cash.
- More than one in two Belgians (55%) made at least one mobile payment this year, either by scanning a QR code or using a smartphone or connected device. This method is especially popular among 16- to 24-year-olds.
- 60% of Belgians made a contactless card payment in the past week, and 77% feel completely comfortable using it.
- 87% of Belgians have already made at least one online purchase, mainly using a debit card, a banking or payment app, or a credit card.
